AWWA C906

AWWA C906 — Polyethylene Pressure Pipe and Fittings, 4 In. through 65 In., for Water Distribution and Transmission

American Water Works Association standard for large-diameter HDPE pressure pipe used in municipal water distribution and transmission mains.

What is AWWA C906?

AWWA C906 is the American water-utility standard for polyethylene pressure pipe in nominal sizes 4 inches through 65 inches (≈ DN100 – DN1650). It complements AWWA C901 (which covers smaller sizes, ½ inch – 3 inches). C906 specifies dimensions, materials, hydrostatic design basis (HDB), pressure class derating, joint testing and quality assurance for PE pipes used in potable water transmission and distribution. The standard is co-ordinated with NSF 61 (potable water safety) and PPI TR-3 (hydrostatic design basis).

Why it matters to buyers

AWWA-aligned utilities — which together serve about 80% of the US population — write tender specifications that cite AWWA C906 explicitly. Same in much of Canada and several Latin American countries. For the US municipal water market, AWWA C906 is essentially a prerequisite alongside NSF 61: the former proves the pipe is engineered correctly for pressure service, the latter that the water it carries will be safe to drink. Failure to demonstrate AWWA C906 compliance in a US water tender will usually disqualify the bid at the technical review stage.

How Primepoly meets AWWA C906

Primepoly's PE4710 / PE100 water-transmission pipe (DN100 – DN1600) is manufactured, tested and documented per AWWA C906 requirements. Pressure ratings follow Table 4 of the standard — DR 9 (250 psi), DR 11 (200 psi), DR 13.5 (160 psi), DR 17 (125 psi), DR 21 (100 psi), DR 26 (80 psi) — all at 73.4°F (23°C). Each shipment carries the AWWA C906 quality assurance documentation plus the cross-referenced NSF 61 listing for potable use.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What is the difference between AWWA C906 and AWWA C901?

C901 covers ½ in. – 3 in. (smaller residential / service line sizes); C906 covers 4 in. – 65 in. (distribution and transmission mains). Primepoly's catalogue addresses both with the same factory and certifications.

Q. Does AWWA C906 include fittings?

C906 covers the pipe, with reference to companion standards for fittings (AWWA C906 Appendix lists qualified fitting types). Primepoly's fittings are matched dimensionally and pressure-rated to be installed as a system with AWWA C906 pipe.

Q. Is AWWA C906 compatible with ISO 4427?

Compatible in intent but the dimensional schedules differ (IPS / DIPS for AWWA vs. metric OD for ISO). For projects specifying one or the other, the pipe must be manufactured to that schedule — different SKUs.

Q. Can I get AWWA C906 with FM Approval for fire mains?

Yes. Primepoly can supply FM-approved AWWA C906 DR 9 / DR 11 for underground fire-main service. FM listing must be specified at order — it requires a separate audit chain.
