GB 15558

GB 15558 — Buried Polyethylene Piping Systems for Gas Supply

The Chinese national standard for buried PE gas distribution pipes. Often referenced as a benchmark in Asia, Central Asia and Africa for natural gas distribution projects.

What is GB 15558?

GB 15558 is the Chinese national mandatory standard for buried polyethylene piping systems used in gas supply. It is published in 3 parts — pipes (Part 1), fittings (Part 2) and valves (Part 3). The standard mandates yellow colour (or black with longitudinal yellow stripes), maximum operating pressure of 1.0 MPa (PE100) / 0.4 MPa (PE80) at 20°C, electrofusion-only joining above DN90, and a slow-crack-growth resistance requirement above the ISO 4437 baseline. The standard is closely aligned with ISO 4437 and EN 1555 but adds Chinese-market-specific safety reservations.

Why it matters to buyers

All natural gas distribution networks built within China after 2005 use PE pipe manufactured to GB 15558 — the standard is mandatory and the Quality Supervision authorities (now SAMR) actively enforce it. Beyond China, GB 15558 is increasingly referenced in Belt & Road infrastructure projects across Central Asia, South-East Asia and Africa where Chinese contractors lead engineering and procurement. Tender packages for gas-distribution work in Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and parts of East Africa frequently list GB 15558 as an acceptable alternative to EN 1555 / ISO 4437.

How Primepoly meets GB 15558

Primepoly's PE100 yellow gas pipe is produced under GB 15558 / ISO 4437 dual compliance. Hydrostatic testing, slow-crack-growth (PENT test) and oxidative-induction-time results meet both standards. Every export shipment carries a GB 15558 compliance certificate plus an ISO 4437 type-test report from a SAC-accredited laboratory. Electrofusion fittings are paired with the matching pipe in a single qualified system.

Max 1.0 MPa for PE100 at 20°C; derate for higher operating temperature
Jointing
Electrofusion mandatory above DN90; butt fusion only with qualified procedure
Slow crack growth
PENT test ≥ 500 h, exceeding ISO 4437 minimum

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is GB 15558 equivalent to ISO 4437?

Largely yes — GB 15558 was harmonised with ISO 4437 in its 2003 and 2015 revisions. There are minor regional additions (slightly stricter slow-crack-growth and marking requirements). Primepoly products meet both.

Q. Why does gas pipe have to be yellow?

Universal safety colour code: yellow alerts excavators that they are about to expose a gas line, reducing the risk of accidental rupture during civil works. Some markets (UK, USA legacy) accept black-with-yellow-stripe as a visually-equivalent alternative.

Q. Can I get GB 15558 pipe in custom colours for project identification?

Yellow is mandatory. Custom striping or stencilled batch / project codes are allowed and Primepoly can apply them at the factory on request.

Q. Does Primepoly supply gas pipe outside China?

Yes. Gas pipe is a major export line, especially to South Asia, East Africa and Central Asia. Documentation can be supplied in GB 15558 format, ISO 4437 format, or both — specify at quote time.
